Rumored “Hollywood” Treo Doesn’t Exist

Last November, a report from Sagio Investments described two new Treo smartphones to be launched this year, including one code-named “Hollywood,” described as a more stylish 3G Treo designed for the European market. Brighthand can now confirm from very reliable sources that this device does not exist.

According to this information, Palm does not have any current or future device code-named “Hollywood.” Moreover, the original report of a slim Treo designed for Europe is false, and the company has no such model on the table.

Recently, photos have been circulating that appear to depict a new Treo with a thinner design and 3G GSM. If the photos do turn out to be legitimate, this may simply be a slightly redesigned GSM counterpart to the Treo 700w that’s currently available on Verizon Wireless.

This new information muddies the water considerably as to Palm’s release plans for the year. It’s known that the company intends to debut three additional new smartphones. One is expected to be a Palm OS equivalent to the Treo 700w. The other two were widely believed to be the Hollywood, and the other model mentioned by Sagio, the “Lowrider.”

With Hollywood out of the picture, it’s unknown exactly what Palm has planned; whether the GSM versions of the Treo 700 qualify as “new” models; and what mix of operating systems will be used.

The entry-level Lowrider wasn’t mentioned by our source, but it must be considered somewhat suspect in the light of the revelations about its compatriot.
