RumorMill™: An Overview of the iPAQ h4000 Series

Capping off a year in which it has already introduced five new models, Hewlett Packard is preparing to release two more handhelds before Christmas, the iPAQ h4155 and the iPAQ h4355. Both of these will have two forms of wireless networking: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. However, their outer appearances will be quite different.

A document has appeared on the Web giving a complete overview of HP’s fall line up, including the h4000 series. In addition, information was leaked to Brighthand by someone who had been briefed by HP on these handhelds, and pictures of both the upcoming models have appeared on PocketPC italia.com.

iPAQ h4155

iPAQ h4155 -- Courtesy of Pocket PC Italia The h4155 will have a styling reminiscent of HP’s popular h1900 series. And, surprisingly, it is almost exactly the same size. The h4155 is 4.4 inches long, 2.8 inches wide, and .53 inches thick (113mm by 71mm by 13mm), dimensions so close to the h1900 series’ that it’s possible the difference are only rounding errors. At 4.4 ounces (125g) is also only a hair heavier. If these dimensions turn out to be correct, then HP will have essentially managed to squeeze Wi-Fi and Bluetooth into the h1900 series without adding appreciably to the size or weight.

The h4155 will run Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PCs on a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor. It will have 64MB of RAM and 32 MB of ROM.

It will include a 3.5-inch transflective screen capable of displaying 16-bit color. This will be at the Pocket PC-standard resolution of 240 by 320 pixels. This model will also have an SD slot that supports SDIO. Happily, it will include a headphone jack that is the standard 3.5 mm, so it won’t require the adapter the h1900 series needs.

This handheld will have an infrared port that supports consumer IR, plus it will come with Nevo Remote, an application that allows it to be used as a universal remote. This model will include a 1250 mAh battery that is swappable. It will also come with a cradle.

The iPAQ h4155 will cost $449 when it is released later this year.

Courtesy of Pocket PC Italia The h4355 will have a very different design from its series mate. This model will include an integrated thumboard to make writing emails and instant messages easier.

However, under the hood both handhelds are quite similar. The h4355 will also run Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC on a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor, have 64 MB of RAM, and 32 MB of ROM.

Both models will have a 3.5-inch, 16-bit transflective screen and an SD slot that supports SDIO. As already mentioned, this device will have both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, giving it multiple options for connecting to the Internet without wires.

This device will use a 1500 mAh swappable battery. The h4355 will also come with Nevo Remote and include a cradle.

Because it needs room for its thumboard, the h4355 will be a bit longer than most handhelds. It will be 5.5 inches long, 2.9 inches wide, and .6 inches thick (138.7mm by 74.6mm by 14.5mm). The weight will be 5.8 ounces (165 g).

The iPAQ h4355 will cost $499 when it hits the market before the end of this year.
