Over the past few days some PDA sites have reported suspicions that the Tungsten T3 is near the end of the line. Much of the evidence surrounds lack of stock at some retailers and cut prices at others. My contacts at Palmone indicate that not only is the T3 still alive, it’s one of the best sellers in the US.
According to NPD, who tracks retail sales, the Tungsten E has held the number one spot, while the T3 and Zire 21 wrestle over the second spot. I tried to probe further to learn about the next iteration of the Tungsten line. A few weeks ago a poorly made mock-up of a Tungsten T4 surfaced on the web featuring Bluetooth and an integrated keyboard. Palmone won’t comment either way, but I suspect we may not see another high-end Tungsten until the release of OS6 in the spring. It really wouldn’t make much sense to release a device early next year only to have it replaced a few weeks later. Palmone, if they’re smart, will stay away from the breakneck pace Sony has used in the past.
Assuming the T4 comes out in the spring with OS6, the device could break a ton of new ground. I expect such a device to feature both WiFi and Bluetooth, along with the extended screen of the T3 and the fastest processor to date. I don’t think the T4 will have a keyboard, my guess is they’ll update the TC with better hardware and leave the keyboard on that model. Who knows though…we’ll have to wait and see.
