Around the beginning of this year, Palm’s CEO revealed that his company is going to release four new models in its Treo line of smartphones during 2006. So far, Palm has released two of these — the Treo 700w and 700p — and people are eagerly awaiting the next two.
Not surprisingly, rumors about these models are coming fast and quick.
The latest of these comes from CoolSmartPhone.com, which claims that at least one of these upcoming smartphones will be part of a new Treo 750 series.
Facts and Rumors
Floating amid the rumors is a hard fact or two. Palm and Vodafone have announced that a Windows Mobile-based Treo will be coming to this carrier’s network in Europe before the end of 2006, although the companies have given few details about this device.
This fits in with one of the more reliable rumors. Cingular is supposedly planning to release its own new Windows Mobile Treo — code-named Lennon — at about the same time, and most people are assuming that these two will be the same device marketed by two different carriers.
Unlike Palm’s Treo 700 series, this Pocket PC will use the GSM/GPRS standards. In addition, it will offer support for an even faster wireless-networking standard, UMTS.
If the unconfirmed information about Lennon is correct, it will also sport Wi-Fi and EDGE. It will almost certainly include Bluetooth, as well.
However, according to msmobiles.com, the European version of this smartphone will lack built-in Wi-Fi. This report doesn’t give any reason why Vodafone would decide to have this short-range wireless networking technology removed from the device.
Several pictures supposedly of this upcoming Treo have been making their way around the web. All of them show a handset without the large external antenna that has been so unpopular on previous smartphones from Palm.
Aside from these changes, this upcoming model is expected to be virtually identical to the Treo 700w that’s already available, so it will likely have a 240-by-240-pixel display and the enhancements Palm made to Windows Mobile 5.0.
Whether it is called the Treo 750 or not, Palm has made clear that this Pocket PC phone will debut in Europe before anywhere else.
According to rumor, this will happen in September, and this Treo will debut on Cingular in October.
The Other Upcoming Model
At this point, essentially the only information of any kind on the other upcoming Treo comes from the Cingular leak. Among the few details available on this device — code-named Nitro — are that it will have a 1.3 megapixel camera and the very low-resolution image shows that it is running the Palm OS.
Those interested in this smartphone should be happy to hear that, like the Lennon, it will apparently lack an eternal antenna, but they will likely be less pleased to learn that it also lacks support for UMTS.
It will supposedly debut at the same time as the Lennon, and is expected to have a lower price.
