Samsung Did Not Infringe Apple Patents Willfully, According to Judge

The Apple vs. Samsung court battle over patents has raged on to the point where it seems like it might never end; but an important development has occurred, in which Judge Lucy Koh ruled that Samsung’s infringement of Apple patents was not in fact willful.

The ruling does not override the initial jury ruling issued in August, where Apple was awarded $1.05 billion. However, this verdict means that Samsung will not have to pay the additional $500 million that Apple was asking for.

In her ruling, Koh stated that Apple’s inability to prove the “objectively high likelihood that its [Samsung’s] actions constituted infringement of a valid patent,” since Samsung revealed that it had reason to believe that some of Apple’s patents were invalid.
