An upgrade to Android OS 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is going to be released for a number of smartphones and tablets Samsung released this year — including the top-selling Galaxy S II. Users of these devices are going to have to wait until next year, however.

Samsung Galaxy S II from T-MobileAndroid OS 4.0 is the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system. It debuted recently on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but many people who bought a new handset in this year are hopeful they will get a system software upgrade soon.

Samsung says the Galaxy S II will get its upgrade in the first quarter of 2012. This will likely also include the Samsung Epic 4G Touch, as that’s Sprint’s re-branded version of the S II.

Google has already begun sending out a version of Android ICS for last year’s Samsung Nexus S. However, another recent model from this company, the Samsung Galaxy Player, is not on the list of devices getting upgrades.

The company says it will give details on the timing for all these upgrades when the releases get closer.
