Samsung Galaxy S III MiniSamsung today revealed the much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S III mini at a press event in Germany. As its name suggests, the handset is going to be something of a miniature iteration of Samsung’s popular flagship Galaxy S III device.

Before the Galaxy S III mini was revealed, it was speculated that the device would offer many of the same characteristics of its predecessor in a smaller more manageable package. However, as a recent leak correctly speculated, the device will in fact offer several downgrades from its larger counterpart.

Besides offering a smaller 4-inch Super AMOLED display, the Galaxy S III mini will also offer a lower resolution of 800 x 400 with a 233 ppi, compared to the Galaxy S III’s 1280 x 720 resolution with 306 ppi. The handset will, however, beat out its predecessor by offering Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) straight out of the box, along with the latest iteration of the TouchWiz UI.

The upcoming handset will also offer a dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM,  either 8GB or 16GB of storage, and support for up to 32GB via microSD cards. Additionally it will house a 1,500 mAh battery and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera.

Despite the fact that the Samsung Galaxy S III mini was originally expected to offer similar specs to the original Galaxy S III, the lower specs do not come as a surprise due to the device’s smaller frame. The Galaxy S III mini appears to be targeting a global demographic offer an mid-level device that is, in Samsung’s words, “an optimal choice for consumers who are looking for more practical smartphones.”

Samsung has yet to reveal any information regarding how much the new handset will cost or when it’s expected to hit market.
