Samsung Galaxy SIII MiniLast week, rumors surfaced that Samsung would be unveiling the Galaxy S III Mini at an event on October 11, after a German press event invitation was leaked. Today, Samsung mobile chief JK Shin confirmed the rumors, stating that the 4-inch Android would be shown this Thursday in Germany at the Samsung press event.

Shin went on to explain that the company believed there was a demand for a cut down 4-inch version of its popular 4.8-inch predecessor. Such a device would give Samsung a handset similar in size to the iPhone 5, for those consumers who were turned off by the larger, bulkier designs of other models.

Unfortunately, Shin did not mention pricing or stateside availability, but he did say that the product could potentially be launched in Korea as well.

New Specs Leaked

Initially the Galaxy S III Mini was expected to house similar specs to the Galaxy S III in a smaller package, but a recent leak from MobileGeeks suggest otherwise. According to the German tech-site, some specs will be delivered as expected, including the 4-inch Super AMOLED display and Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), along with the TouchWiz UI.

However, other features in the miniature handset appear to be downgrades when compared to its predecessor. The 4-inch display will only have a 800 x 480 resolution, while the quad-core processor of the original Galaxy S III will be replaced by a dual-core STE U8420 chip running at 1GHz, with 1GB of RAM and a rear shooter that offers 5 megapixels. According to the leak, the Galaxy S III Mini is expected to be priced somewhere around $510.

Samsung has yet to comment on the recent spec leak, but chances are all of this information and more will be revealed at tomorrow’s press conference.
