The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has given its approval to the Samsung SGH-i505, an upcoming smart phone that runs the Palm OS. This device has not been officially announced by Samsung, though the company demonstrated it in Europe last fall.

The SGH-i505 will run Palm OS 5.2.1 on a 200 MHz Motorola MX1 ARM-based processor. It will have 32 MB of RAM and 32 MB of ROM. It will be capable of running most applications written for the Palm platform.

It will have a clamshell design, with a screen and application buttons on one side, and a keypad and D-pad on the other. However, it will use a “twist and flip” arrangement, which means the screen can be rotated and closed down over the keypad, allowing the device to be used in the traditional tablet configuration.

When closed, this device will be 3.6 inches long, 2.1 inches wide, and 0.9 inches thick (91.5 x 54 x 22.8 mm). It will weight 5.2 ounces (147g).

The i505’s TFT screen will be able to display 16-bit color. It will have a resolution of 162 by 176 pixels, with the extra height being used for some icons displaying phone status.

Users will have the option oif entering Graffiti 2 anywhere on the screen, or in a virtual text-entry area. The keypad can also be used to enter text, or an on-screen keyboard can be pulled up.

On the back of this device is a camera capable of taking 640 by 480 pixel (VGA) color images. It will include a built-in flash for taking pictures in dim lighting.

It will also have a Secure Digital card slot that supports SDIO, which means it will be able to use peripherals besides just memory cards that plug into the SD slot.

The i505 will be a GSM/GPRS device and will include a SIM card slot. Of course, it will offer both voice and data services. It will come with jBrowser, an application that will allow access to WAP sites, an SMS application, and email software.

It will come with two swappable batteries, each of which Samsung says is capable of powering the device for 2.5 hours of talk time or 96 hours of standby time.

This smart phone will also ship with a travel charger, USB cable, cradle, and a headset. It will have a built-in voice recorder.

It is not known at this time when the Samsung i505 will be available in the U.S. or at what price.

Thanks to Gaurav for the tip.
