Today, Palm, Inc. announced that SanDisk Corp. has chosen Treo 600 and Treo 650 smartphones running GoodLink for access to email, calendar, contacts, notes and tasks for 225 select employees in the United States, Asia, Europe and Israel. With 150 Treo smartphones already deployed, this mobile communications solution gives SanDisk executives, sales, IT and operations staff global access to cell phone service and email on a single device.
SanDisk is the world’s largest supplier of flash memory data-storage card products. As a fast-growing global company, real-time communication and collaboration among employees is both a challenge and a necessity. To unify a distributed workforce with real-time communication, SanDisk chose the GSM-enabled Treo smartphone running GoodLink from Good Technology.
Scott Dillon, manager, Global IT Support at SanDisk, recalls, “When an executive says that he traveled throughout China, didn’t need a laptop and was connected all the time — that was all our employees needed to hear to want a Treo smartphone of their own.” Word of the Treo smartphone quickly spread throughout the company, without the use of internal marketing, causing the user base to grow quickly.
The Treo smartphone running GoodLink empowers SanDisk employees to do the following:
- Leave their laptops behind when traveling abroad;
- Make cellular calls and send email worldwide;
- Work easily with SanDisk products, such as SD Cards and MultiMediaCards;
- Be consistently reachable for retail partners and colleagues;
- Increase flexibility of working locations; and
- Stay on top of important developments while away from the office.
The Treo smartphone with GoodLink has freed employees from the burden of traveling with a cumbersome laptop and has improved their productivity with worldwide access to phone and email. “They can’t imagine living without it,” said Dillon. SanDisk also consolidated cellular providers, which has cut their service costs in half. To much of the IT team’s delight, the Treo solution also had very low impact on the helpdesk.
SanDisk’s strategic objective to carry devices that are compatible with its products also drove them to choose the Treo smartphone. With the Treo smartphone, employees can use their SanDisk products, such as SD Cards and MultiMediaCards. Many employees use these cards to back up their GoodLink application running on the Treo smartphone, while others use it to store images taken at tradeshows and events or run applications, such as games, for personal use.
SanDisk saw Good Technology as a company that could deliver a wireless messaging and corporate application platform on an employee’s device of choice. “Good Technology provided the right combination of features and technologies we wanted,” said Dillon. “We wanted to give our employees a choice of devices they would use — but everyone chose the Treo smartphone.” GoodLink provides SanDisk users with a rich, familiar Outlook-like experience and IT with robust management capabilities. The company selected the combined Treo smartphone and GoodLink solution as the best union of email device and cell phone.
SanDisk is using GoodLink 4.0 on the Treo smartphone, which runs with Microsoft Outlook for access to email, calendar, contacts, notes and tasks. Good Technology also offers the IT group Secure Over-The-Air provisioning and management. Instead of having every Treo smartphone sent to SanDisk’s IT team to be set up for each employee, they can provision employees in Europe and Asia from a central location. Additionally, if the device is lost, the IT team can wipe the device clean remotely, protecting any intellectual property that was kept on the device. For the future, SanDisk is looking to integrate its corporate applications onto the Treo smartphone.
