Seiko claims handheld accessory will improve PDAs

Seiko has unveiled a new gadget that can transfer scribbled notes and drawings on to personal digital assistants.

The SmartPad is an electronic writing tablet that digitises handwritten information into ‘GIF’ or ‘BMP’ files.

It captures the movement of the pen and instantly transfers the data via infrared.

Seiko says the pad will help designers and engineers by removing the need to scan important documents.

“We are pioneering a new category of IT equipment,” claims Joerg Welsch head of European sales and marketing.

“Sketch, doodle or write in any language using a pen and paper and you have it automatically stored on your PDA.”

The SmartPad is compatible with handhelds produced by Palm, Sony and Handspring.
