Skype Acquires Video Chat Software Developer Qik

by Reads (8,963)

The video chat powerhouse Skype has announced, via its blog, that it has finalized its acquisition of software developer and former rival Qik.

SkypeQik offers a popular video chat app for Android OS-based phones, and Skype’s acquisition of the company and its technology continues Skype’s move into the smartphone market after last month’s release of Skype 3.0 for the Apple iPhone.

Skype still faces competition from Apple’s FaceTime app and the strong possibility that future versions of the Android OS will offer support for video chat through Google Talk.

However, taking control of Qik’s already established presence in the Android market, Skype has definitely displayed an urge, and the capacity, to be one of the biggest players in mobile video chatting.
