Al launch, the iPhone version of the SlingPlayer streaming TV app would work only over Wi-Fi, but AT&T announced today that this service can now run over 3G connections, too.
The iPhone version launched last year with support for streaming over Wi-Fi. Since mid December, AT&T has been testing the app and has recently notified Sling Media — as well as Apple — that it can run on its 3G network.
Just the First of Many
AT&T Wireless has been criticized in the past for blocking its customers from using high-bandwidth applications. In recent months, however, the company has been working to ease up on some of its restrictions.
“Just as we’ve worked with Sling Media in this instance, we look forward to collaborating with other developers so that mobile customers can access a wider, more bandwidth-sensitive, and powerful range of applications in the future,” said Ralph de la Vega, the head of AT&T’s mobile phone division.
Another possible app that has been blocked because of its high bandwidth requirements is a version of the Skype VoIP client. There is a version of this for the iPhone now, but as with SlingPlayer Mobile, it runs only over Wi-Fi.

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod touch costs $29.99, and is available now at the iPhone App Store. At this point, it has not yet been updated with 3G support.
There are no subscription fees, but as mentioned earlier it requires a Slingbox to operate. These start at $180, and can also be used to watch streaming TV from a Windows PC or Mac. The edition for Apple’s devices will only work with Slingbox SOLO, PRO, or PRO-HD.
