Sony has cranked out so many Xperia smartphones in recent years, it’s tough to keep track of them all. Adding to the confusion are three additional handsets: one big, one small, and one budget.
The Sony Xperia Z3 is its latest flagship. The Android smartphone sports a 5.2-inch “Trilumious” display with “Live Colour LED and X-Reality for mobile,” with a 1080 full HD resolution. It will ship with Android 4.4.4 with a light Sony skin, and sport a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor and 3 GB of RAM.
Sony claims the new Xperia is waterproof and IP65-68 rated, and it will have a 3100 mAh battery, good for two days of usage thanks to a power-consumption feature that adjusts the display’s refresh rate in accordance with usage.
As with previous Xperias, Sony is pushing the smartphone’s imaging prowess. The Xperia Z3 will have a 20.7-megapixel rear shooter with an ISO 12,800 sensitivity and 25 mm wide-angle lens, which will make for good-to-decent low-light photos. It will also support 4k video and sport a 2-MP front-facing camera.
New photo modes include Face In, for including selfies and reactions in rear-camera shots, a movie creator for stills and videos, Sound Photo for adding sound to pics, AR fun for adding scribbles and animations to pics, and a multi-camera mode for connecting to and shooting alongside up to three Xperia smartphones.
One interesting feature is PS4 Remote Play, which Sony claims enables the Xperia Z3 to act as “a remote screen to connect to and control your games on PS4.” This all happens when both the PS4 and smartphone are on the same Wi-Fi network (and the TV is occupied), and it supports the PS4 Dualshock 4 controller or the new GCM10 Game Control Mount accessory.
A Smaller Z3
The Xperia Z3 Compact is essentially the same smartphone as the Xperia Z3, but smaller. While other smartphone makers typically cut down specs along with display size for their mini models, the Z3 compact as the same innards as the Z3, and also supports PS4 Remote Play. The display is smaller, however, at just 4.6 inches. It has less pixels, too, featuring a 720 HD display.
A Cheaper E3
For those who don’t want the features or specs of the flagship Xperia Z smartphones, the Xperia E3 offers what Sony describes as a “fun and fast smartphone that brings you flagship experiences without the pricetag.”
That translates into a 4.5-inch display with a 854 x 480 resolution, quad-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor, 1 GB of RAM, and a 2,330 mAh battery. It will also have a 5-megapixel camera, microSD card support, optional dual SIM, and LTE connectivity.
Sony has not yet announced pricing or availability, outside of the vague “fall” release window. The Z3 will be available in white, black, copper, or silver green; Z3 Compact in orange, green, black, or white; and the E3 in white, black, copper, and yellow.
