Though the DigiTimes isn’t always the most trusted source in news, its unnamed “sources in the supply chain” are claiming that BlackBerry has increased its parts purchases and will likely ship between 30 and 40 million devices this year. The numbers are more or less believable, especially given the strong sales so far of the company’s QWERTY-equipped Q10 in Europe (and pre-orders in the U.S.).
Last quarter, the company shipped roughly 1 million devices with only the Z10 hitting the market right before BlackBerry turned in its quarterly performance. Now, the company has added the Q10 and the entry-level Q5 to its arsenal, and intends to target emerging markets with the latter. Between the existing models and the likely release of more BlackBerry 10 devices in the second half of this year, there’s some credence to the sources’ estimate of 30 to 40 million shipped units.
