Sprint is going to start taking pre-orders on Friday for the newly-announced iPhone 4S. It will be the only wireless carrier offering this smartphone with an unlimited data plan.
This is a significant step for Sprint, as this will be the first time it will be able to offer Apple’s very popular smartphone. Previously, this product was restricted to just AT&T and Verizon.
A Range of Options
In addition to the iPhone 4S, the carrier will be picking up the iPhone 4, which was released last year. This will allow Sprint to offer iPhones in range of prices, from $100 to $400.
The 16GB version of the iPhone 4S is going to sell for $200 with a two-year contract, the 32GB one will cost $300, while the 64GB model is priced at $400. These are the standard prices — Apple doesn’t allow carriers to undercut each other with deals on its handsets.
Sprint is already taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4, which has 8GB of storage capacity and sells for $100 with contract.
All of these are set to debut next week. Deliveries will start on Friday, Oct. 14.
Unlimited Wireless Data
iPhone shoppers who want an unlimited data plan will need to turn to Sprint, as it is the only U.S. carrier that still allows new customers to sign up for a data plan without restrictions. Customers who buy an Apple smartphone will actually be required to sign up for an unlimited data plan, which also includes unlimited texting and calling to any other cell phone for $110 a month.
Those who wish will also be able to sign up for Mobile Hotspot service, which allows the smartphone to act as a wireless modem for up to five other computers. This is an additional $29.99 per month, but is limited to 5GB of data transfers.
iPhone 4S Overview
As its name suggests, the fifth-generation smartphone from Apple is an enhanced version of the one that debuted last year, the iPhone 4. Improvements include a faster 1GHz dual-core processor and an 8MP camera. It will not, however, support Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network.
The iPhone 4S will launch running iOS 5, a new version of Apple’s mobile operating system. This will include a new voice-control system called Siri, as well as the iCloud online backup service.
