Android 4.1.2Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy S II can now be upgraded to Android 4.1.2. The update is currently available for download over-the-wire, not over-the-air.

About the Update

The update to Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) offers a number of new features and enhancements for this older model, including Google Now, lock screen widgets, actionable notifications, and keyboard software improvements.

The update also offers a number of Samsung-specific features including features seen in the Galaxy S III such as Direct Call, Smart Stay, and Pop Up Play. Additionally, the update adds in Easy Mode, Blocking Mode, and Power Saving Mode.

Getting the Update

Unlike many Android upgrades this can’t be installed wirelessly. Instead, owners of the Galaxy S II will need to hook their smartphone to a computer to download and install it. Details for doing so are available on Samsung’s support web site.

Bodes Well for the Future

The fact that Sprint and Samsung have released this update years after this device has been released bodes well for Sprint consumers that are considering buying the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S IV, as the handset will likely receive support for years to come.
