Last month, the world got its first look at the SPV E200, a smart phone that runs Windows Mobile 2003. While it has been announced that this device will be available in Europe soon, there has been no word of a U.S. release. However, today some evidence has emerged that shows it might be available in this country.
The SPV E200 was developed by High Tech Computer (HTC), a company based in Taiwan that develops and manufactures devices for other companies. HTC has received approval from the Federal Communications Commission to release this smart phone in the United States. While this means HTC can legally offer this model, whether it is actually available in the U.S. is up to the wireless carriers. It is not yet known if any of them intend to offer this device.
According to the documentation filed with the FCC, the SPV E200 runs a 132 MHz TI Perseus 1 processor. It has 32 MB of RAM, though it is not yet known how much of this will be available to the user.
If it is released in the U.S., it will be the first handset available in this country to use Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone. The other Windows-powered devices that were released recently run Smartphone 2002, last year’s version of this operating system.
The E200 will have a 2.2-inch, 176-by-220 pixel screen that can display 65 thousand colors. It will have a built-in camera that can capture still images at up to 640 by 480 pixels (VGA) or video.
It will offer Bluetooth short-range wireless networking. It will also have an SD/MMC slot that supports SDIO. It will include a 1,000 mAh swappable battery.
This will be a GSM/GPRS tri-band device (900/1800/1900). As a smart phone, it will function as both a mobile phone and a handheld. It will be able to access email and the Web, make phone calls, play games, and run other types of applications.
Pricing and availability of the SPV E200 in this country is up to wireless service providers. It is expected to be available later this month in Europe from Orange SA.
All the documentation filed with the FCC about this smart phone can be found on this government agency’s web site.
