Play.fm, an online radio service specializing in recordings of DJs and live performances, is now offering a mobile app that streams the station to pretty much any smartphone.
Georg Hitzenberger, founder of Play.fm, made a prediction considering the nature of his company and its new application: “Cloud Music, i.e., the consumption of music hosted on dedicated streaming servers, is the future of the music business.”
Play.fm currently has 150,000 monthly users, and expects this number to grow with its new mobile availability.
Price and Availability
The app has an upfront cost of €2.99 (a little over $4 U.S.), which provides 90 days of unrestricted access to Play.fm’s stream. After the initial 90 days, users are allotted five hours of listening time per month.
A premium version of the app is scheduled for release in Q2, which will offer continued unlimited listening time after that first 90 day period, but pricing for this upgrade is not yet available.
The app is currently available (in non-premium form) in the iTunes Store, the Android Market, and the Microsoft Zune Marketplace.
