The Latest on the Tungsten T5

Recently, rumors and speculation have been rampant about palmOne’s plans to release a new high-end handheld. Now, the first piece of evidence has emerged that this is definitely going to happen, and it’s going to happen soon.

According to a post in the Brighthand forums, there is a listing in the inventory database of a major electronics retailer for a Tungsten T5 which will sell for $400.

Unfortunately, there are no other details on this upcoming handheld in the database. However, there is also a listing for a “Tungsten T5 USB desktop cradle” ($29.99). This is a strong indication that the T5 won’t use the Palm Universal Connector. If it did, it wouldn’t need a cradle designed specifically for it.

Also reportedly listed in the inventory database are the “Tungsten T5 travel charger” for $29.99 and the “Tungsten T5 hard case” for $39.99.

What Happened to the Tungsten T4?

According to numerous sources, palmOne’s next handheld won’t be called the Tungsten T4, but instead will be the Tungsten T5.

A possible reason for this is the fact that the number 4 is considered to be very unlucky in China and Japan. This is similar to the superstitious fear some Westerners have of the number 13.

If this information turns out to be correct, this won’t be the first time Palm/palmOne skipped over the number 4 when naming its products. A few years ago, it went straight from the Palm III to the Palm V.

What Is Known about the T5

There is little definitive information available on the Tungsten T5 at this point.

According to rumor, it will not use the sliding design that has been a hallmark of the Tungsten T series since the original model. It will therefore be thinner and longer than its predecessors.

Supposedly, it will have a unique memory set-up. It will have 256 MB of memory and use Flash ROM chips instead of RAM. This means that all the data stored will be able to survive a hard reset.

According to one source, the T5 won’t have built-in Wi-Fi, but it almost certainly will be able to use palmOne’s Wi-Fi SD card. It will reportedly include Bluetooth, as all of palmOne high-end models have for some time.

If palmOne holds to tradition, it will announce its new fall handhelds and smartphones on October 1. the Tungsten T5 is expected to debut at this time.
