Mark/Space has released a major upgrade to The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile, its software for synchronizing Pocket PCs and WM Smartphones with computers running Mac OS X.
New features in version 3.0 include synchronization of notes and voice memos, Word and Excel documents, Safari bookmarks, iPhoto albums, and iTunes playlists.
Files and Folders
One of the most significant features just added to The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile is file and folder synchronization, which lets users setup folders and files to keep in sync between their Mac and mobile device.
This means that users can store Word and Excel files on a Pocket PC, edit them on the go, then have them automatically synchronized between the Mac and Pocket PC.
To leverage the multimedia capabilities of Windows Mobile devices, this update introduces plug-ins that synchronize directly with iPhoto and iTunes.
Users can select iPhoto albums to send to the device, and The Missing Sync will automatically resize them for the smaller screens on mobile devices and download them. Photos from camera-enabled devices can be imported directly into an iPhoto album or into a folder on the Mac.
iTunes playlists can be downloaded to the device in a similar fashion. Although Windows Mobile devices can’t play protected AAC audio files, such as those purchased from the iTunes Music Store, they can play podcasts and unprotected music.
One of the most asked-for features in version 3.0 is synchronization of notes. Since Mac OS X doesn’t include a full-featured application for creating, categorizing, and searching through notes, The Missing Sync includes Mark/Space Notebook, a powerful helper program, for free.
This application also provides notes syncing with Yojimbo, an information organizer from Bare Bones Software, the producers of BBEdit.
Other improvements in version 3.0 include synchronization of additional contact fields on Windows Mobile 5 devices, Address Book contact photos, and Safari bookmarks.
