Japanese electronics giant Toshiba is putting together its first smartphone.

Recently Peter Ford, the company’s manager for mobile com-munications in the EMEA region told the German-language web site Computerwoche.de that the official announcement for this will be later this week at the CeBIT tradeshow.

Even at this point, though, Toshiba has not yet decided which mobile platform this device will use. It is considering both Windows Mobile and Symbian.

Mr. Ford has not yet released any hardware details about this smartphone.

Back in the Game?

Toshiba was once a major player in the world handheld market, but a few years ago stopped widely releasing its models.

It still comes out with a new Pocket PC every now and then but these are available only in Japan.

Its upcoming smartphone, however, will clearly be released in Europe and possible other places, as well.
