Toshiba Doesn’t Deny e830 Is in Development

Last week, a rumor surfaced in France that Toshiba is developing the e830, a replacement for the e805. The rumor also said the e805 has been discontinued, which Toshiba has officially denied is true. However, it didn’t say anything about the e830.

How the information on the e830 came to light is somewhat complicated. Earlier this month,, a French web retailer, accidentally listed the e805 for 269 Euros (about $320). Not surprisingly, it quickly received a huge number of orders, as that’s less than half the price this model typically sells for. It decided to honor the first 150 orders at that price, but said it had no more e805s in stock and was unable to get any more, as this model had been discontinued. However, the retailer said the remaining customers who tried to order the e805 could put in a discounted pre-order for the e830, which it expected to have in stock in July.

According to, the e830 will essentially be the same as the e805, except that it will include a next-generation PXA270 XScale processor running at 520 MHz and Bluetooth short-range wireless networking.

Toshiba Indique “Non”

According to a statement released by Toshiba France, the e805 has not been discontinued. Didier Halbique, the company’s Retail & Product Marketing Manager, told PocketPCParadise that this Pocket PC will soon receive an update to Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition and will continue to be sold as the e805.

The updated version of this device is expected to go on sale in May, about the same time Toshiba will release a Windows Mobile SE update for current e805 owners.

It should be noted that Mr. Halbique did not deny that his company is working on the e830. He only said that the e805 has not been discontinued at this time.

More About the e805

Toshiba e805 When it was introduced last fall, the Toshiba e805 broke new ground by being the first Pocket PC with a VGA screen. It also includes Wi-Fi wireless networking.
