Toshiba has committed to releasing an operating system upgrade for its TG01 — a very high-end smartphone now available in Europe and expected to debut soon in the U.S.

The company is actually re-launching this model with Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro, but there will be no difference in the new model besides an upgraded OS and a slightly changed name: TG01 Windows phone.

This new version will be released in Europe on October 6, the day Microsoft has named as the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5.

In addition, as mentioned earlier, Toshiba has promised to give current owners of the TG01 with Windows Mobile 6.1 a free upgrade. When this will be available was not disclosed, however.

More about the Toshiba TG01
Toshiba TG01In a year that has seen the release a number of models with large, high-resolution screens, the TG01 still stands out thanks to its 4.1-inch, WVGA (800 by 480 pixel) resistive touchscreen, where most of its competitors have considerably smaller screens.

This device also raises the bar in a second area: it’s the first Windows Mobile device to be based on 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Instead of the standard Windows Mobile user interface, this smartphone runs a 3D one created by its manufacturer. But it will still comes with Microsoft’s standard suite of entertainment and productivity software, plus a GPS receiver.

The large display doesn’t leave room for a D-pad, but this model does include an on-screen virtual trackpad.

Despite all its built-in features, the TG01 is just under a centimeter thick, or 0.39 inches.

Coming to America?
This high-end smartphone is already available in various countries in Europe and Asia.

And that might not be the whole story. Over the summer, the FCC gave its approval to a CDMA version of the Toshiba TG01, raising the strong possibility that this very high-end device is coming to Sprint, Verizon, or even both.

In addition, Toshiba is on Microsoft’s list of companies that will be producing Windows Mobile 6.5-based models for the N. American market.
