Treo 600 Bluetooth Bounty a Bust

by Reads (12,928)

Several months ago, TreoCentral began organizing a pledge drive to raise enough money to convince some developer to create a driver to allow the palmOne Treo 600 to use a Bluetooth SD card.

Eventually, $5812 was pledged to the first person who could create a driver for a Bluetooth SD card that would allow this smartphone to HotSync, exchange files with another Bluetooth-enabled device, and use wireless headsets.

Sadly, the deadline of September 6 came and went without anyone winning the bounty. Even worse, TreoCentral reports being told by developers that what they wanted was impossible to accomplish, “because it was physically impossible for the Treo to access the voice stream from the radio.”

So at this point it looks like Treo 600 users will never be able to use Bluetooth short-range networking with wireless headsets.

The closest thing to good news in this is the next-generation Treo is rumored to have built-in Bluetooth. This model is expected to debut in early October.
