As expected, European wireless carrier Orange has officially announced that it will be carrying the Treo 600 smart phone. However, the device won’t be available until next month.

The Treo 600 is a major upgrade and redesign of Handspring’s Treo line. If offers the latest version of the Palm OS and more memory in a smaller casing. It will also include a camera and an SD slot.

The carrier is making it one of its Orange Signature phones, which means it will come with a suite of productivity applications. This includes Orange Backup, which allows customers to store their personal and business data ? such as contacts and calendar ? on the Orange network and restore those details when required. That means that if a customer loses their phone, the information remains secure on the Orange network and can be restored on a new phone. There is also the Orange Update feature which lets customers update their phone with the latest software as well as download and store new applications over the air.

The Treo 600 will be released during October in the U.K., France and Switzerland. It is expected to sell for 299 pounds in the U.K.

While Orange may be the first, it soon won’t be the only wireless service provider to carry this smart phone. Handspring said earlier this year that Sprint PCS will begin offering it in the U.S. next month. There’s also an online petition urging Verizon to offer this device.

A Overview of the Treo 600

The Treo 600 is actually the name for a whole series of new smart phones from Handspring. This will include both CDMA and GSM/GPRS versions. The most important changes include the move to Palm OS 5, the addition of a digital camera and an SD slot, and a significant redesign. As a smart phone, it will combine the features of a wireless handheld and a mobile phone.

The Treo 600 series will run Palm OS 5.2.1 on a 144 MHz Texas Instruments OMAP processor. It will have 32 MB of RAM, of which 22 MB to 25 MB will be available to the user, depending on the set-up chosen by the wireless providers that will be offering it.

This will be an almost complete redesign of the Treo line. Like previous Treo models, the Treo 600 series will include an integrated mini keyboard, though this one will be even smaller. It will have a 160-by-160 pixel color screen. The new models will be significantly smaller than their predecessors at 4.41 by 2.36 by .87 inches.

It is expected to cost between $400 and $500.
