Reportedly, High Tech Computer (HTC) has begun producing and shipping the Treo 650 smartphone to palmOne.

HTC is a Taiwanese company that specializes in manufacturing smartphones and handhelds for other companies. It makes devices for HP, Dell, and many more.

According to DigiTimes, HTC has already started to ship some units of the next generation Treo to palmOne. Full production is supposed to start next month.

This Taiwanese news site doesn’t refer to this device by name, but other rumors indicate that this smartphone will be called the Treo 650.

DigiTimes cites “market sources” as the origin of this information, and it hasn’t been confirmed by HTC or palmOne.

If palmOne holds to long-standing tradition, it will announce its new fall handhelds and smartphones on October 1. The Treo 650 is expected to be announced at this time.

An Important Model for palmOne

The Treo 600 has proved to be a very important product for palmOne. This company’s shares have gone up considerably this year, based primarily on the success of its smartphone.

However, the stock has dropped a bit in recent weeks, after it was revealed by an analyst that Nokia may be working on a smartphone that will resemble the Treo 600. palmOne’s share price also dropped after the announcement of the first BlackBerry smartphone.

The improvements included in Treo 650 will help palmOne stave off this new competition.

What the Rumors Say about the Treo 650

Last month, several pictures and some additional details of palmOne’s next smartphone were leaked to TreoCentral.

According to this source, the Treo 650 will be quite similar to the current Treo in size and shape, but will include a HiRes screen, a better camera, and Bluetooth.

Additional information and a picture of this smartphone are available in this article.
