Treo 750 Announcement Coming September 12

There have been rumors for quite some time that Palm, Inc. is going to announce its next smartphone next month, and this has now been officially confirmed by the company.

In addition, a Palm spokesperson was even wiling to reveal the exact date to Reuters. “The announcement is going to be made in the UK on September 12, and we will give all the details then but at the moment all we are saying is that it will be out before the end of the year.”

This isn’t the first time Palm was willing to talk about this smartphone on the record.  Last month, it and Vodafone said that a Windows Mobile-based Treo will be coming to this carrier’s GSM network before the end of this year.

In addition, companies revealed that this device will run Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC. This will make it the first Windows Mobile device from Palm to use the GSM/GPRS standard. It will also support UMTS, a 3G wireless-networking standard widely used in Europe.

Unconfirmed Information

Rumors, leaks, and other unconfirmed sources give some additional details on this smartphone, which supposedly will be called  the Treo 750.

According to some pictures that have appeared on the Web, this device will greatly resemble previous smartphones from Palm, but, unlike its predecessors, not need an external antenna.

Whether the Treo 750 will have built-in Wi-Fi is a matter of debate. Palm recently said it was going to add this short-range wireless networking technology to its smartphones, but hasn’t committed to including it in any specific model. This device will almost certainly include Bluetooth, though.

It is also supposed to have a 1.3 megapixel camera and an SD card slot.

It seems Vodafone won’t be the only company offering this model for very long. Information that leaked out of Cingular indicates that this carrier will begin offering the Treo 750 in October.
