UMPC-Like Handheld from HTC Will Be Released in the U.S.

A few months ago, a cellular-wireless Windows Mobile handheld started to catch people’s eyes, as it has a feature set to rival many UMPCs. Word went out in January that this device — code-named the Athena — would go on sale in Europe through T-Mobile, but there was nothing about a U.S. release.

That changed today, when HTC revealed that this device will be indeed introduced in the U.S. It won’t be available through a carrier, though, as this manufacturer will be offering this handheld itself.

Although it has revealed the name under which this model will be sold — HTC Advantage X7501 — and that it will be available through Amazon.com this summer, this company has not yet said what it will cost.

Still, the price tag is likely to be quite high. The version sold in Europe is 500 Euros with a 2-year contract.

An Overview of the HTC Advantage X7501

The Advantage will have a unique design. This will start out in a standard enough fashion: a tablet with a touchscreen. Added to that, though, will a detachable keyboard. The main unit can be magnetically connected to one side of the keyboard to make a laptop-like shape.

The keyboard can not be used unless it is physically connected to the main unit. However, the main unit, of course, is completely usable without the keyboard, thanks to its touchscreen.

This handheld will sport numerous high-end features, like a 5-inch VGA screen, an 8 GB hard drive, TV-out port, a GPS receiver, 3-megapixel camera with flash, and HSDPA.

It will run Windows Mobile 6 Professional on a 624 MHz XScale processor, have 128 MB of RAM and 256 MB of ROM.

The X7501 will come with Microsoft’s Office Mobile. For entertainment, it will include a version of Windows Media Player and stereo speakers.

In addition, to tri-band HSDPA/UMTS, the Advantage will have quad-band GSM with GSM/EDGE. It will also offer Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth 2.0.

Not surprisingly, this won’t be a small device. Just the main unit will be 5.2 inches wide, 3.8 inches tall, and 0.8 inches thick with keyboard attached (99 mm x 134 mm x 20 mm).

It will also have a 2100 mAh battery and a miniSD slot.

More information on the HTC Advantage X7501 can be found on its manufacturer’s web site.
