UPDATE – Rumor – Sony to announce Clie SJ33 and SJ22 (pictures)

Not a huge surprise, but my contact at Sony would not confirm or deny this report. Combined with his statement at CES and the fact he did not deny the SJ33 and SJ22, I think it’s safe to assume these units are for real. Of course the specs are a moving target, but I’d bet we’re pretty close.

At the CES Sony confirmed plans to refresh the SJ product line. We took that to mean we could expect new units soon, and soon it might be. Reports are now leaking out that Sony will release two new color PDAs.

Assuming it’s real, the high gloss black SJ30 was obviously a glimpse of what was to come. The SJ33 is said to be much thinner than the current SJ30 and as you can tell from the picture, comes with a MP3 built in. The SJ22 is also supposed to be a color unit, breaking away from the monchrome screen the SJ20 had. It will not sport any MP3 abilities though, which seems to be the major differentiating factor.

Other features include a flip open cover that appears to be permanent. The buttons are also new, with a sunken look to protect from accidental pushing. It’s hard to verify from these pictures, but there is lots of talk that both units may rely on virtual graffiti. Are you interested yet?

Both are set to operate on OS 4.1, so no new processors, although they may run on the 66MHz units the NR series used. I wish they had decided to support the new Memory Stick format as well, but that feature requires OS 5 and more horsepower.

ClieSource is reporting that both units are actually in BestBuy’s computer system with release dates of 2/28/03 which is within two weeks of the NZ90 scheduled release. The SJ33 is set to retail for $299, which seems reasonable and takes direct aim at the new Pocket PC entry-level devices. No word on pricing of the SJ22. Recent price drops of both units though, add some validity to this report.

With all the features packed in this rumored SJ33, I’m wondering what Sony will do to up the ante with the T series, which is also due for a refresh soon. There’s also no mention of an updated monocrome unit. Of course, we’ll be keeping this news item updated with anything else we can dig up.
