Veo is set to introduce later this month a pair of miniature digital cameras for handhelds. There will be an SD version called Photo Traveler for Palm and a Compact Flash version called Photo Traveler for Pocket PC.
Both cameras will have a sensor capable of taking pictures at 640 by 480 pixels (VGA) in 24-bit color. The user will have the option of reducing this to 320 by 240 (QVGA). The screen of the handheld will be used as the view finder.
The lens of both of these cameras can be swiveled to face either towards the person holding the handheld or away. They will come with an aluminium hardcase and will sell for $100.
The Palm OS version will save images in a proprietry format on the handheld but these will be converted to JPEG by a conduit during the next HotSync. There will be a Windows version of the condit available when the camera is released and a Macintosh version is planned for the near future. It works with Palm OS versions 4.0, 4.1 and 5.0. Photo Traveler for Palm will be available October 20.
The Pocket PC version will save images directly in JPEG format. It can also take short videos. It works with PocketPC 2000 and 2002. Photo Traveler for Pocket PC will be available October 15. The company eventually plans to make a Pocket PC version of the SD camera.
