Users of Verizon’s iPhone 5 noticed that, under certain circumstances, their smartphone was using cellular data even though the device was connected to a Wi-Fi network. The carrier has released an update that will fix the issue.
How to Install Verizon Update
To install the update, consumers need only to enter the Settings menu, navigate to the General tab and then select About. From there, wait for a window to appear that says Carrier Settings Updated and then click OK to prompt the installation. Next, hold the Sleep/Wake button down until you see the “slide power off” option, then select that option. Once the iPhone is fully powered down, simply turn the device on again to complete the update.
To make sure that the update completed properly, go to the Settings menu again, select General and then About. If everything updated correctly, the carrier should be displayed as “Verizon 13.1”.
While Verizon has issued this fix for the problem, it is uncertain if consumers will be refunded for the data leaks that ensued as a result of it. Verizon has yet to make a statement.
Currently, it is speculated that the issue may have been a result of the carryover from the Wi-Fi + Cellular feature that was in the betas of iOS 6, but eliminated in the final version. However, until full statement is ascertained from either Apple or Verizon, that remains speculative.
