The version of the Apple iPhone that is supposedly heading to Verizon in January might be significantly different from the current model. A source familiar with this smartphone says both the Touchscreen and processor will be upgraded.
There have been persistent rumors that Verizon is going to begin offering a smartphone from Apple in the coming months, ending AT&T’s long-held exclusive rights to Apple’s phones. Many have assumed that this will be version of the iPhone 4 modified to support this carrier’s network, but an unconfirmed report says that won’t be the case.
According to a person who claims to have access to Apple prototypes, Verizon’s iPhone could have a 3.7-inch touchscreen, not the 3.5-inch one used on AT&T’s model. The resolution for this is not yet known. The current model has a 640 x 960 display.
This source also says that the upcoming device will have a faster processor: 1.2 GHz instead of 1 GHz.
In addition, the antenna on Verizon’s version will be moved inside. The current iPhone 4 has an external antenna, which in most cases improves reception but is subject to interference by the user’s hands.
According to a separate report, this version of the Apple’s smartphone will have its antenna built into a metal backplate, not around the edge as AT&T’s device does.
The Apple prototype that’s the source of these details supposedly has Verizon branding — it’s not just a version of the iPhone for another CDMA-based carrier like China Mobile.
A Controversial Topic
Before the launch of the very first iPhone, an agreement was forged that made AT&T the sole U.S. provider for the iPhone. Recently, however, there have been a series of unconfirmed reports that this deal is coming to an end.
Despite this, some people doubt that Verizon is going to offer the iPhone any time soon, and point out that rumors saying this carrier will get Apple’s smartphone crop up almost every year and have never panned out.
Still, this year is different because Apple has already ended its exclusive carrier agreements in some other countries and seen immediate large increases in sales.
Coming Early Next Year
Verizon’s version of the Apple iPhone will reportedly hit store shelves in January, and some predictions are it will sell in the millions.
The product will supposedly go into production in December at the Taiwanese plants of Pegatron. This same plant will also make a version for China Telecom, according to a published report.
