Move over, Google! Samsung has filed a patent for “Galaxy Glass”, which is looking increasingly like a wearable computing competitor to Google’s “Google Glass.”
The device, which is rumored to be released at the upcoming IFA conference in Berlin, would likely display push notifications, song information from music apps, and text messages from a user’s smartphone on a transparent or translucent eyeglass display. It also would feature headphones or speakers for playing music.
Samsung hopes to increase brand awareness through wearable devices such as Galaxy Glass and its Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
Unlike Google’s version, the patent application for Galaxy Glass features what appear to be dual projectors or displays – Google Glass offers just a single display over the right eye.
While Google has been beta testing its Glass with a small group of developers and early adopters, there is still no commercial release date set for its device. It remains to be seen if smart eyewear is really what the market is looking for, or if Samsung and Google are off base in their predictions for the market.
