In January, an unconfirmed report surfaced that palmOne was planning to release an updated version of its popular Treo 600 smart phone. Several days after the supposed release date, there’s no sign of this device.
Supposedly, the Treo 610 is going to shore up some of the limitations in the current model. It was reported to be essentially the same as the Treo 600, but include a 320-by-320-pixel screen and Bluetooth short-range wireless networking.
It was reported that this model would be released on March 1, which was several days ago. Obviously, this didn’t happen.
An Official Denial
Last month, a palmOne spokesperson said there was no basis for the Treo 610 rumor. Though companies habitually refuse to confirm rumors of unannounced products, the spokesperson made several compelling arguments to back up his denial.
As he pointed out, the Treo 600 is still getting rolled out to new wireless carriers. For example, T-Mobile just recently started to offer it. In addition, the Treo 600 is selling faster than palmOne can make it. He asserted that it is simply too early for an updated version.
