In the past 12 months, WhatsApp has handled more messages than all the U.S. wireless carriers combined. Also, earlier this month, the company announced that its users sent and received more than 27 billion messages in a 24-hour span.

At its annual I/O conference, Google announced a Hangout app for iOS and Android users. Meanwhile, BlackBerry Messenger is set to launch cross-platform to iOS and Android users later this year.
