When Will the iPAQ hx4705 Hit the Market?

Many people are eagerly awaiting the debut of the iPAQ hx4705, HP’s first Pocket PC with a VGA screen. However, it appears that HP has run into some kind of problem with this device, because it keeps pushing back the release.

When the hx4705 was officially announced, HP said it would be available before the end of August. Later, the release date was moved back two weeks, to September 9. Now, HP’s official online store will say only that the hx4705 is “Coming This Fall,” which means the release of this model could be as late as November.

No official reason has been given for the delay, but a Brighthand reader reports being told by an HP customer service representative that his company is having difficulties getting LCD screens for the hx4705.

Other VGA Models Delayed, too

The iPAQ hx4705 isn’t the only Pocket PC with a VGA screen to have its release date moved back. Justin O’Dea of PROPortable, the largest retailer of ASUS handhelds in the U.S., says the ASUS MyPal A730w is now expected to be available at the end of October, but it’s possible that the release could be even later than that.

It remains to be seen whether the other two VGA handhelds expected soon, the Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox 720 and the Toshiba e830, will be released when they are expected to be.

A Quick Overview of the hx4705

The hx4705 will be the first iPAQ ever to include a 4-inch VGA display. As this model will use Windows Mobile Second Edition, this screen can be easily switched between portrait and landscape modes.

HP iPAQ hx4705 This device will have a 624 MHz Intel XScale processor. It will also have 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of ROM. This unusual arrangement, with far more ROM than RAM, will allow the hx4705 to have an 80 MB iPAQ File Store. This is non-volatile memory, which means it won’t be erased if the device undergoes a hard reset.

The hx4705 will include both 802.11b and Bluetooth 1.2 wireless networking, as well as a CompactFlash slot and an SD/MMC slot that supports SDIO. It will come with a cradle.

This iPAQ won’t have a D-pad. Instead, it will have a small touchpad below the screen intended to be used with a fingertip.

It will be 5.1 inches tall, 3.0 inches wide, and .7 inches thick (129 mm by 77 mm by 15 mm). It will weigh 6.6 ounces (187 g).
