Soon there will be six Pocket PCs with VGA displays and dual slots: the ASUS MyPal A730w, the Dell Axim X50v, the HP iPAQ hx4700, the Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox 720, and the Toshiba e800 and e830. Those considering buying one of these models should know how they stack up against each other.

Most of these models have been released, but not all of them are available in all areas.

Although all these models have similar specs, the A730w is smaller. It is 4.6 inches long, 2.9 inches wide, and 0.7 inches thick (117 x 73 x 17 mm). It weighs about 6.0 ounces (170 g).

Screen Both the MyPal A730w and the X50v have a 3.7-inch display, and the Pocket Loox has a 3.6-inch display. This will allow these models to be somewhat smaller than their competitors.

The iPAQ hx4705 and the Toshiba e800 and e830 include 4-inch displays.

Expansion Every one of these models has both a CompactFlash slot and an SD slot that supports SDIO.

Of the four, only the A730w and the Loox 720 have built-in 1.3 megapixel cameras.

HP iPAQ hx4705 All five of these models run Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Newly-bought e800s might not come with this operating system pre-installed, but it is available for free on Toshiba’s web site.

The iPaq hx4700 and the Axim X50v have the fastest processor in this group, a 624 MHz Intel XScale PXA270.

The MyPal A730w, Toshiba e830, and the Loox 720 also run processors from the PXA270 family, but these are 520 MHz.

As the first of these models to come out, the Toshiba e800 has an older 400 MHz XScale PXA263 processor.

Toshiba e800 Memory The e830 has has 128 MB of RAM, plus 64 MB of ROM, of which 24 MB is available to the user. The e800 also offers 128 MB of RAM and 32 MB of NAND Flash ROM for extra storage.

For those who like the MyPal A730w but aren’t interested in Wi-Fi, ASUS offers a Bluetooth-only version of this Pocket PC.

Most of these models use Bluetooth 1.2, but the ASUS one uses an older version. The newer one offers better performance when used at the same time as Wi-Fi.
