It seems that yesterday’s report that the Windows Phone 7.8 update had begun rolling out to Nokia Lumia 800 handsets was a bit premature.
While it’s true that a handful of people have received the update on their Lumia 800s, the update is only going out to pre-production handsets and those users were chosen due to their IMEI numbers. Such pre-production handsets are likely to be found in the hands of certain journalists and developers.
Nokia spokeswoman Stella Jansen spoke to WMPoweruser, which initially reported the news, and was kind enough to head off any frustration by explaining the situation. “We react to this, because otherwise people will be disappointed and sit waiting for the update.”
The actual release timeframe for the update is early 2013, at which point those who purchased the handset via retailers will be upgraded to Windows Phone 7.8.
