Zaurus with VGA Screen, Wi-Fi Now Available in U.S.

An English version of the Zaurus SL-6000L is now available from several online retailers. This offers built-in Wi-Fi, a mini keyboard, and a VGA screen.

The SL-6000L has a traditional tablet shape, not a clamshell design like some of Sharp’s other models. The keyboard is exposed by pulling down on the bottom of the device.

This handheld has a 4-inch CG Silicon screen, which has a resolution of 480 by 640 pixels. It can be switched between portrait and landscape modes on the fly.

It uses a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor and includes 64 MB of RAM and 64 MB of Flash ROM. Like other handhelds in the Zaurus line, it runs Linux with Trolltech’s Qtopia environment providing the user interface. This comes with a suite of PIM software, but users will also find a good number of third-party applications with more coming every day. Still, there are far less than are available for the Palm OS or Pocket PC.

It includes an SD/MMC slot and a rechargeable, swappable 1500 mAh Lithium-polymer battery. There is also an optional “sleeve” that adds a CompactFlash slot and an additional battery.

Sharp has designed this Zaurus to survive a drop from up to a meter above the ground.

The SL-6000L can be found at retailers such as PC Connection and Amazon.com for $699.99.

There are two other SL-6000 series models that have been released in Japan. The SL-6000N includes no wireless networking capabilities, while the SL-6000W has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There is no word on whether these other two will be available outside of Japan.

Thanks to metal9966 for the tip.
