The Firefox OS mobile platform from Mozilla is continuing to expand its presence with ZTE’s offering, the ZTE Open, making its way to the United States and the United Kingdom via eBay. While it’s a somewhat unorthodox move for a company to peddle its wares via an eBay listing rather than through carriers or its own website, the strategy isn’t completely unheard of.
The ZTE Open, like most Firefox OS handsets are intended to be, will be highly affordable at a price point of only $80 unlocked in the US and £60 in the UK. The fact that the device is unlocked also means that it will not come pre-loaded with any local apps or features.
Of course, the low price point means very modest specs, including a 320 x 480 3.5-inch display, a 1.0GHz Cortex A5 processor, 512MB of RAM, and 256MB of onboard storage (though it is expandable up to 32GB via microSD and comes with a 2GB card). Other specs include a 3.15 MP rear-facing camera and a 1200 mAh battery.
Unfortunately, ZTE has declined to announce a specific release date for when the ZTE Open will be made available on eBay, saying only that it would be available “soon.”
