Review: Astraware Gem Drop

By: Barry J. Doyle

Finding a PDA game that is not only fun, but keeps me interested for more than a few plays is always a challenge.  Being a big fan of Astraware games such as Diamond Mine and Insaniquarium, I had high hopes for one of the recent titles from Astraware, Gem Drop .

Don t be a wimp!  Choose the Hard game!

At first the game came across as yet another effort incorporating simple gem shifting that could not offer the same bang as Bejeweled (Diamond Mine).  However, with time I soon started to realize the potential strategies that can be incorporated to progress to successive levels.  My interest quickly began to grow.

Gotta love the colors

Fun Gameplay

The gameplay is straightforward.  Simply tap the row of choice and drop the gems into matching sets of three s.  When combined into these sets (as long as they are physically touching), they disappear adding points to your score.  If a spot is not chosen (with a tap of the stylus) within a couple of seconds the gem falls on its own.  Without careful planning the gems will stack up to the top and the game is over.

This ruby will join 3 more to take away 4!

Additional Strategy

Like Tetris, this game does collapse once the pieces have filled the board, but this game offers an extra saving grace.  At random intervals, an animated, gleaming sapphire will appear in the cue.  This provides an interesting remedy to lower the stacks.  By simply choosing a row topped by a gem that appears abundantly in the stacks, you can use the sapphire to magically rid yourself of part of the mess you created and chop the rows down a bit that is for a bit longer!

This game isn t about draining your PDA s battery with overdone sound effects or intensive jaw-dropping graphics.  Rather this game has everything that makes a PDA game great colorful graphics, strategic and addictive gameplay combined into an uncomplicated interface allowing the player control by simply tapping the stylus!  This Astraware title is priced at $14.95 and prospective players can download and purchase this gem at:
