Note – HP has released the h1940 and h1945 which are essentially the same unit with a slightly different software package. In general, go for which ever one is cheaper!
The iPAQ 1910 with its sleek design and super-thin form factor was a huge blockbuster success for HP. Many users reported it having the most brilliant, brightest screen of any Pocket PC. They loved the curvy design and most agreed that the h1910 truly gave meaning to the word Pocket in Pocket PC. Looking back, I can remember stores finding it difficult to keep that model in stock. Now, The Sequel has been released. Part Deaux!
So what s the lowdown with the new HP iPAQ 1940? Well it looks just like the first model, but it has that new “Windows Mobile 2003 OS.” Hmmm, is there anything else they can cram into that little toy? You betcha!
For starters the most exciting addition is built-in Bluetooth wireless communication. This low-power consuming technology allows the unit to access services from other Bluetooth enabled devices. Accessible services which are available include internet connectivity, file sharing, printing and my personal favorite, ActiveSync via Bluetooth. It s great to synch at the breakfast table with my PC, which is on the other side of the house.
A Samsung processor? But is that as fast as XSCALE? Well the iPAQ 1940 is powered by the Samsung 2410 processor rated at 266 MHz. My personal observation is that this chip is not only fast, but very power efficient as well. A major complaint of 1910 users was the battery life rated at 4 hours. This unit is rated at double that (8 hours), and the difference is certainly noticeable even when using Bluetooth and multimedia-based applications.
The iPAQ 1940 includes 64 MB of RAM of which 56MB is user accessible. 13 MB of memory is also available for the iPAQ File Store utility. Another HUGE plus is SDIO functionality for the SD slot. This will prove invaluable for users to take advantage of the up and coming Wi-Fi SD cards and other assorted hardware expandability. Oh and one other thing, there were a lot of users whining about the headphone jack not being the standard size. Was that you?! Well HP heard your cries and have included this handy dandy adapter with the 1940 to enable use of standard headphones.
