The Kensington Travel Battery Pack and Charger is a portable power unit aimed at iPod touch and iPhone users. Kensington claims this battery will extend music playtime 23 hours and video playback 7 hours.

It has a lot of features, but costs $69.99.

The Kensington Travel Battery Pack has a compact, all-inclusive design that makes it perfect for travel. The battery doesn’t require any external cord to be charged on the road… just a standard USB port to plug into. The cap is attached with a hinge, meaning it will never fall off and get lost or be dangling by a lanyard. For the traveler that just wants to pick up a device and toss it in their backpack or suitcase as they are running out the door the Travel Battery Pack is a great no-nonsense item.

Kensington Travel Battery Pack and Charger for iPhone and iPod touchOne concern for some battery packs is how well they work when you add thickness to the device you are trying to connect it to. Since many iPod touch and iPhone users have protective cases the battery pack needs to have a connector long enough to reach through a case opening but short enough to not be a weak link. The Travel Battery Pack didn’t have any problem connecting to every iPod and iPhone I had within reach. This included a second generation iPod touch inside an OtterBox Impact case, an iPhone 3GS inside a Speck Fitted Artsprojekt, and an iPod Video inside a Contour Designs Showcase case.

The dock connector cover was one of the coolest aspects about this battery pack, if for nothing else than how simple and smart the design is. If you are a frequent traveler you can understand how hard or is to just sit back and relax on a flight while still watching video from your iPod touch or iPhone. You might try to prop it up against the seat or a pack of free cookies, but it always slips and falls back down. The cover on the Travel Battery Pack solves this problem and acts as an effective stand, keeping the screen at a 45-degree angle so you can view it dead-on.

Build quality is very well built with a durable plastic shell and protective elements to keep the important stuff from getting broken. The dock connector at the top is covered with a large translucent piece that works double-duty as a stand when an iPod or iPhone is connected. When you are done using it you simple pivot the cover back into position and go about your day. The charging plug is designed with the same simple layout; flipping out to charge and when done tucking back into position on the bottom of the battery pack.

The Travel Battery Pack performed very well with all the devices I connected it to. The battery capacity allowed a second generation iPod Touch, iPhone 3GS, or iPod Video to receive a full charge with some remaining capacity left on the battery.

Kensington Travel Battery Pack and Charger for iPhone and iPod touchRecharging time for the battery pack was slower than expected, taking many hours before the pack was fully charged and all indicator lights had stopped blinking.

No documentation was presented on its charging time or if it supported a bulk charge at a faster rate initially.

  • Built-in dock connector to charge your iPhone and iPod and flip-out USB tip to recharge without the mess of extra cables
  • Extends play time up to 23 hours music, up to 7 hours of video and up to 5 hours of talk time
  • LED battery gauge displays remaining battery pack power level
  • All-in-one design; no cables needed
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion 5.5 Wh battery for iPhone and iPod

The Kensington Travel Battery Pack and Charger easily ranks up at the top of my list of simple yet cool accessories. Kensington took the standard battery design, added an intuitive viewing stand and installed a built-in charging connector.

The battery pack doesn’t rely on outside parts to charge (besides a computer) and it works with everything I threw at it. Compatibility was excellent, working with multiple generations of iPods and iPhones as well as working through cases of different sizes and shapes.

If you are in the market for an external battery pack for an Apple-made media player this ingenious little battery pack is definitely worth checking out.

  • Greatly extends the device’s battery
  • Excellent compatibility even with cases
  • Built-in movie stand

  • Imprecise battery status lights

Bottom Line: The best external battery pack I have used to date for any device.
