Palm Pre and Pixi owners on both the Sprint and Verizon Wireless networks are in for a treat with the recent release of the webOS 1.4 operating system update. There’s only one major new feature, but there are also several small improvements that really add up to enhance the overall user experience.

This is not intended to be a full review of the webOS, but will emphasize the newest features. If you aren’t familiar with this operating system at all, a good place to start is our Palm Pre Review.

Palm webOS 1.4 Video UploadNow with Video
The big new feature is video recording, and it works rather well. You won’t win any Academy Awards, but the quality is more than adequate.

Simple editing tools allow you to tweak the beginning and end points of your video, which is a wonderful added feature. Even better, both the original video and the edited version are saved automatically, so you don’t have to worry about accidentally deleting something important. You can also upload your videos to YouTube or Facebook, or share them via email or text message.

Better Notifications
Notifications for calendar, email, and messaging have been enhanced on webOS 1.4. Now you can select specific sounds as your notifications from within the preferences menu for each application.

In addition, when you get a new message, the LED light in the gesture area below the screen pulses, even when the screen is off. If the phone is sitting on a desk or table, you’ll know at a glance when a new message is received.

Palm webOS 1.4 Call LogImproved Integration
The integration between the phone functions and the rest of the system have been improved. With one touch, you can dial from the call history and you can also tap and hold to dial phone numbers included in emails and Web pages. Additionally, you can forward a text message via email without having to cut and paste the contents of the message.

Microsoft Exchange contacts are now included in Universal Search as well, making it much easier to reach co-workers even if you can’t remember their phone numbers.

Improvements to both battery life and overall system performance are also part of the webOS 1.4 update, which will hopefully fix the battery life issues that have plagued the Pre and Pixi in the past.

Available Now
The webOS 1.4 update is available now, and will automatically download in the background when the phone is idle. If you’re in a hurry to start making your own home movies, you can force the update to download immediately from within the Updates application in the launcher. You will be notified when it is ready to install, a process that takes a few minutes.

The new version of Palm’s operating system is for Sprint’s Palm Pre and Palm Pixi, Verizon’s Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, as well as the versions of Pre and Pixi released internationally.
